| Our History The Rome Sailing Club began in 1955 with only five sailors at Garden Lakes in Rome, Georgia. Through the years, the club has grown to over 64 family memberships and has its own property on Lake Weiss near Leesburg, Alabama, less than an hours drive from downtown Rome. In its first years, 1955 till 1972, the club resided at Garden Lakes, but then moved to leased property on Lake Weiss near Cedar Bluff, Alabama, just down the Coosa river. From 1980 to 1990 the club was located at Bay Springs Marina, just across the lake from the current club property. We then purchased the current property and built our own facilities that we have today. We completed construction of "A" dock in March 1990 and "C" dock in 1991. RSC Members About half of the club members still reside in Rome, the remaining number come from as far away as Atlanta, Birmingham and Chattanooga, which are only an hour and a half drive away. Many members have families who enjoy sailing together, some are couples and a few are singles. Age ranges from teenagers on up. The club also does not lack in diversity, there are many unique and talented individuals who have lived and traveled to many places. Each member brings something special to the club to share and we all benefit from each other. Boats Sailboats docked or stored at the club range in size from a 7 ft dingy to 30 ft crusiers. There are almost always a boat or two for sale, usually posted on the bulletin board in the club house. The only club owned boats are a pair of Snarks and a dingy. Activities & Programs While some clubs are "Yacht Clubs" and may have certain activities accordingly; our club is a SAILING CLUB, and a place for anyone with any size boat to enjoy the water and the sport of sailing. Our activities include 3 race series with 9 races each, a DIYRA Regatta, raft up trips and cookouts. During the winter we have our annual Commidore's Ball in Rome, which includes a semi-formal dinner, music, dancing and is always a lot of fun. The club certainly has something for everyone, whether you love to race or just like to have a good time cruising, you won't find yourself alone on Lake Weiss. Affiliations The Rome Sailing Club is a member of both the United States Sailing Association (USSA) and the Dixie Inland Yacht Racing Association ( DIYRA).
